The Beauty and the Beast transposed in the Thousand and one nights’ Middle-East by one of the Opéra Comique’s most renown composers and directed by the opera house’s current director, Louis Langrée.
Michel Fau and Hubert Barrère’s magical and storytelling decors, filled with prodigious visual and musical effects, will thrill young and old.
A lost Persian merchant takes refuge in a luxurious yet abandoned ominous castle. As soon as he picks a rose for his daughter Zémire, the infuriated and frightful lord of the estate, Azor, appears. The merchant will die if he doesn’t sacrifice one of his children.
Marmontel, Marie-Antoinette ’s favourite composer, adapted the Beauty and the Beast transposing it in the Thousand and One Nights’ Middle-East. Filled with prodigious visual and musical effects — storms, apparitions and metamorphoses — sometimes poetic, sometimes absurd, the creation follows Zémire’s rites of passage and celebrates the purity of her feelings: filial devotion and romantic love. Dedicated to the Comtesse du Barry and conceived before the royal court, it was met with great success, first at the Opéra Comique and then all over Europe.
The Opéra Comique’s director Louis Langrée pays tribute to one of the most famous composers of our repertoire as he leads the tandem Les Ambassadeurs - La Grande Écurie, who is renown for playing period instruments. Michel Fau and Hubert Barrère’s magical and storytelling decors will thrill young and old.
