The heart and its reasons in french opera, opus 2
"All French operas since Lully have been about love; but not one of them makes us experience it"
Reynaldo Hahn Compositeur
In the XIXth century, operatic art was focused on self-fulfilment and the assertion of one’s desires, but was still struggling with the social group’s binding forces: Carmen embodies this. Nowadays, the spectrum of emotions is of interest to anthropology, sociology, psychoanalysis and rhetoric. Through history, musicology and dramaturgy we shall continue to renew our view on how operatic art explores its dominating passion: love.
