Opéra-comique in three acts. Libretto by Eugène Scribe. Premiered on 2 December 1837 at the Opéra Comique (Salle des Nouveautés)
Before taking the veil, the Queen of Spain’s niece leaves the convent incognito to dance one last time at the ball. But when the time comes to return, she finds herself locked out of the convent. During a crazy night, she will have to change her identity several times as well as her plan, and finally, her vocation.
The ninth most played work at the Opéra Comique, Le Domino noir is emblematic of its Romantic repertoire and Auber’s best title according to Berlioz: “Light, brilliant, joyful, oftentimes full of biting witticism and charming intentions.” Onstage, misunderstandings and disguises follow one another while the score combines Spanish pages, cheerful ensembles and virtuosic arias.
Valérie Lesort and Christian Hecq designed a staging of metamorphoses full of fantasy and poetry. Patrick Davin returns to defend Auber’s art at the Opéra Comique after having rehabilitated La Muette de Portici in 2012.
