This myth is reminiscent of that of Melusine: a beautiful and wealthy young woman falls in love with a humble artisan and offers him prosperity and recognition until a priest discovers her twofold nature, part-woman part-serpent.
This Chinese folktale, an interracial love story full of betrayals and revenge, was adapted in various forms to theatre, opera and cinema. Here is the most recent lyrical version signed by two Sino-American artists. Created in 2010 by the Boston Opera, it received the Pulitzer Prize for Music the following year. The piece intertwines eastern and western musical traditions to raise concern about the serious issue of ostracism, all the while using the codes and styles of Chinese opera.
The Opéra Comique is delighted to present this amazing production, of a great visual intensity, in an exceptional partnership with the Beijing Music Festival.
