Julien Behr first graduated from the University of Lyon III with a master's degree in business law and then entered the Lyon Conservatoire in 2005. Five years later, he achieved his vocal studies with the First Prize. In 2009, he was awarded the “singers’ revelation of the year” by the association ADAMI and made his stage debut at the Aix-en-Provence Festival in the title role of Orpheus in the Underworld.
He was soon invited to many opera houses in France and abroad, with major roles from the Mozart repertoire: Tamino (The Magic Flute), Ottavio (Don Giovanni), Ferrando (Così fan tutte), Belmonte (Il Seraglio) and Arbace (Idomeneo).
Julien Behr then explored other repertoires, such as Bel Canto with the roles of Edgardo (Lucia di Lammermoor) and Ernesto (Don Pasquale). He also performed Admète (Alceste), Pelléas (Pelléas et Mélisande), Fenton (Falstaff), Laërte (Hamlet) and Tom Rakewell (The Rake’s Progress).
Recent highlights include his role debut in Alfredo (La Traviata) in Turin (2021). This season will see him as Tamino at the Gran Teatre del Liceu Barcelona. He will also take part in the creation of Shirine (Thierry Escaich) at the Opéra national de Lyon.
Named in the category “singer’s revelation of the year” at the Victoires de la musique classique in 2013, he regularly participates in various TV shows to help share opera with as many people as possible. In 2018, he released his first solo CD, Confidence, with the Opéra national de Lyon’s Orchestra, conducted by Pierre Bleuse.
