Early on, Laurent Castaingt decided to work in the world of entertainment, and more particularly in the lighting design field. He divides his time between theatre, dance and opera.
He collaborates with artists as diverse as Alfredo Arias, Bernard Murat, Jean-Louis Grinda, Richard Brunel, Jean-Claude Auvray, René Loyon, Karel Reisz, Hideyuki Yano, Roman Polanski, Sylvie Testud, Laure Duthilleul, Jean-Claude Berutti, Alain Delon for almost all of his stage appearances…
He has worked for the greatest international venues: the Paris Opera, the Vienna Volksoper, Gran Teatre del Liceu de Barcelone, Monte-Carlo Opera, Teatro di San Carlo in Naples, Teatro Colon in Buenos Aires, Hong-Kong Opera, Chorégies d’Orange, Comédie-Française, Théâtre de l’Odéon, Théâtre de l’Athénée, Teatro Valle in Rome, Sporting in Monaco…
He designed the scenographies for performances by Jean-Louis Grinda (Tannhäuser, The Tales of Hoffmann, Duello Amoroso, and recently Thaïs), Elsa Rooke (Suza’s Transformations, Argento’s Postcards from Morocco, A Midsummer Night’s Dream, Leuenberger’s Le Ruisseau noir) and Marguerite Borie (Salomé, Giulio Cesare, Boesmans’s Reigen).
He also created the scenography and lighting design for the stage adaptation of Virginie Despentes’s novel King-Kong Théorie at the Théâtre de la Pépinière and the Théâtre de l’Atelier in a production by Vanessa Larré. His collaboration with choreographer Eugénie Andrin, which began several years ago with Les Passagers, continued recently with L’Histoire du soldat at the Grand Opera in Avignon.
His research on luminous matter and nature gave birth to an outdoor installation in Geneva, titled Écorces vives (Bright barks) and to a collaboration with illustrator François Schuitten for Planet of Visions for the World Expo held in Hanover in 2000.
Laurent Castaingt has received three Molière nominations for best lighting design. His book Le Théâtre de la lumière (Theatre of Light) is released in November 2022 by Deuxième Époque.
