In a few words
Madame Angot, the famous fishwife, had become the spokesperson for the Parisians during the Revolution. After her death, the merchants of the Halles raised her daughter, whom they now want to marry to a brave wigmaker. But with her fiery temperament, Clairette takes after her mother. And then she prefers the songwriter Ange Pitou, who is however wanted by the Directory police...
Concept
“Brought back to a time known to the audience [May 1968], this opera regains its impertinence, its joyful insolence. Without losing its liveliness and humor, generated by the situations, it gains in depth. It gives priority to female characters and shows the strength of their complicity to assert themselves, struggle, and affirm their freedom. It describes the porosity of social classes united by a common project.” - Richard Brunel, director
Press review
“The Opéra-Comique unveils a colorful feminist rendition of Madame Angot's Daughter and wonderfully revives the masterpiece of Charles Lecocq. (…) Richard Brunel's version is full of fantasy and allows (re)discovery of this exciting score filled with energizing choirs.

« "The conductor Hervé Niquet and the stage director Richard Brunel bring a breath of youth and rebellion to the Opéra-Comique by revisiting a forgotten operetta by Charles Lecocq."
"Musically and theatrically, Madame Angot's Daughter displays a fresh and beautiful vitality."
