Richard Brunel unveils the eminently modern significance of this bubbling social panorama, which sketches the portrait of a combative youth enamoured with truth and freedom.

Madame Angot, an infamous fishmonger, had made herself the spokeswoman for Parisians during the Revolution. After her death, the market-hall merchants raised her daughter. They now want to marry her to a brave wigmaker but Clairette is feisty like her mother and prefers Ange Pitou, a cabaret entertainer, who is wanted by the Directorate’s police…

Inheritor of Offenbach, Lecocq settled in Brussels where he was successful. There,  he created the brilliant and inspired score of this ambitious comic-opera about political and popular matters. Fictional and historical characters cross paths in a plot that is as funny as it is thrilling.

Richard Brunel unveils the eminently modern significance of this bubbling social panorama, which sketches the portrait of a combative youth enamoured with truth and freedom.
